Echo and Narcissus

Beyond the forest grazed the horses tame
Their master was a Prince Narcissus by name
The Prince did often wander from his home
Among the trees and flowers did he roam

Magic of the air beneath the round full moon
From his lips was drawn a gental tune
To that tune came a tiny fae
Who did throw herself into the Prince's way

And Faery, upon his face did look
By his beauty was so deeply took
From that moment and forever on
To the Prince her heart was lost and gone

The Prince did scorn the maiden supernatural
Though her name Echo showed not her beauty actual
Bluntly did he push aside the poor small soul
Her tears into her sleep did they lull

The Prince, he wandered on without a thought
He passed a water's edge and slowed then stopped
Examined his reflection in the water calm
Mistook his own fair face for an elfin one

"Elf!" he cried, his voice full of glee
"I demand you show your fair person to me!
For in all my travels and wanderings
Your face is far the fairest of those that I have seen."

The face, for it was meerly his reflection in the pond
Mocked him and mimicked him but never did respond
The Prince, absorbed by his own reflection
Leaned in to kiss the face of pure perfection

Then, perhaps by some power unseen
The Prince a little too much did he lean
Lost his slippery footing then headfirst fell
Into the cold clear depth of the faery well

Echo saw, much to her distress
The whole proceeding of Narcissus' death
In her mourning pain she cast her power
For her love she forged a clutch of flowers

Robbed of her joy and consumed by her pain
She ran afar as the stars began to wane
In her distress she blundered upon a cave
Which from her faery home was far away

Saddened and deadened she began to cry
A mournful sound that pierced the nearby sky
Her pained sobs forever to be heard
From mountaintops high above the earth

She sat in that cave for many days and nights
All the while mourning with all her might
Wasting away 'til no flesh nor bone was to be found
Nothing but a sad and mournful sound
